What is the name of the tool you use to check compression?

This is the tool you use in place of 1 spark plug then crank the engine and it shows you what the compression of that cylinder is. Are there some other smart things to do before buying a used car?

uhhh.... compression tester.

Other smart things are to check each spark plug, this will tell you the condition of the engine. Check automatic transmission fluid for a burnt smell and or brownish color of fluid. (should not smell burnt and should be red). Check engine oil for contamination. Check all lights, wipers, emergency brake, tire condition, cv joint boots etc.

TEST DRIVE the vehicle and listen for any noises and try to identify where they are coming from.
Reply:A compression gage. Us professional types can do it in a fraction of the time by running a relative compression test electronically. Just have a good mechanic check it out before you buy it.
Reply:It's called a compression gage.
