What is the name of the type of bird that can talk and is Not a parrot?

I am trying to find a pet bird and i know a friend used to have a small bird that was similar to a canary and it talked but i dont know what those birds are called. Also, can you buy them at pet stores?

What is the name of the type of bird that can talk and is Not a parrot?
Canaries are quite small. The only other pet birds in that size range are finches, lovebirds, budgies (aka parakeets), and parrotlets. Of those, I believe that only budgies and parrotlets can imitate humans easily. It is said that lovebirds can talk - but it's very rare. Budgies can be excellent talkers, while parrotlets can be very hard to understand.

Cockatiels can imitate, but are larger than canaries.
Reply:As stated above, Myna Birds talk and also Starlings talk. You can do a search on "WeeWoo" on youtube and he is a talking starling.

BTW...cockatiels are parrots, for everyone who answered cockatiel and the question said NOT a parrot.

Myna birds can be purchased from a breeder. Starlings are not native to the U.S. and are not generally bred by breeders. Many people end up with starlings because they found them fallen from the nest and decide to care for them. Starlings that are turned in to any wildlife rehab are never returned to the wild because it is illegal to release a bird back into the wild that is not native to its area. I do not recommend trying to find a starling outside to raise...Birds like that belong outside, free. All birds do but unfortunately we have decided to cage them.
Reply:Lovebirds and parakteets can talk cockatiels learn to whistle words do a search in yahoo IMAGES for them see if they look like the bird your friend had
Reply:A myna bird is not of the parrot or cockatoo family but it is a better talker than most. It is also a very good mimic and can even make sounds like a cell phone or of any day to day sounds like car horns or police and ambulance sirens.
Reply:I'm not sure about canaries, but I know that jackdaws can sometimes learn to imitate sounds, including words. I don't think, though, that you can buy them at a pet shop.
Reply:COCKATOO!!!
Reply:I think that you are talking about a cockateil. Its like a smaller version of the cockatoo and has the spiky hair thing on top of its head. It can talk but will need training and yes you can buy them in pet stores...most of them im sure anyway.

Hope this helped :)
Reply:its a cockatiel pick be for best awnser
Reply:i have to cockitials and they talk you can buy them from pet stores
Reply:Some cockatiels can but usually only males, also budgies sometimes can but you ca never gurantee that they will and they are more likely to if the are the only bird in the house. But i wouldn't buy any birds from a pet shop only breeders as you don't know the parentage or how they have been treated, also if the dad was a talker the baby is more likely to talk, but there are plenty of breeders around you can usually find some online, hope this helps.
Reply:Talking birds include:

Sturnids: Mynah birds, European starlings, etc. European starlings are relatively easy to keep, and the males can be excellent talkers if imprinted.

Corvids: Crows, ravens, magpies. Difficult to keep, and keeping them is regulated in many countries.

Parrots: Best talkers: amazons, budgies, African greys. Most others also talk to some extent, including cockatiels, cockatoos, lorikeets, and macaws. Poicephalus, Pyrrhura conures, and parrotlets rarely talk. However, all parrots are too much work to buy just because they talk. Make sure you know what you're getting into before you consider one of these birds.
Reply:You could get a cockatiel they are very sweet birds..BUTT only the males will talk. so you have to have a DNA done on the bird before you buy it so you will know MINE is very funny. it will say I love you ...I am the bad dog. come here -pee a boo

charlie is a pretty bird and so on...and they are good for childen also they need to be hand feed.

hope this helps

this is the most common colour, but they also can come in paler colours, all the way to all white. They are about the size of a budgie.

other talking birds which can be kept as pets (excluding parrots) are cockatoos and galahs but they are generally larger birds.
