What was the name of the law or doctorine that enforced equal time be given to presidential candidates?

I seem to remember that a tv station or radio station was required to give each candidate equal time during an election. The fairness doctorine required that contrasting viewpoints be presented not equal time.

The Fairness Doctrine attempted to create a balancing of VIEWS in radio broadcasts. Although never found to be unconstitutional, it was not found to be easily enforcable, either, and was gradually weakened then dropped.

The equal TIME rule applies only to strictly political (campaigning) broadcasts by candidates.

"The equal-time rule specifies that U.S. radio and television broadcast stations must provide an equivalent opportunity to any opposing political candidates who might request it. This means, for example that if a station gives one free minute to a candidate on the prime time, it must do the same to another."

There are more details of the application, and history, of the rules at

Reply:It was called the "Fairness Doctrine".

It was overturned as it infringed on 1st amendment right to free speech.

If elected Obama has said he will push to have it re-instated. Pelosi and Reid already are working on it.

It dictates if anything political is aired, the opposition must get equal time.

I hope it passes, If it does I will sue NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, MSNBC the NY Times and every other media outlet that's in the tank for the left immediately.

The days of being able to just say what you want and have people buy it, those who aren't ignorant anyway, are done.

Name for me a network that actually espouses to be pro-Republican. Can you? I am not talking about your opinions about Fox etc.; you don't realize when everything is so biased to the left anything remotely close to unbiased will look right leaning.

Air America and other failures like Gores little attempt at success do so for liberals.
Reply:There was never a law that said that. It was called the fairness doctrine, opponents of it correctly point out that such a law would violate the first amendment.

No one who actually watches the news would actually pay any attention to John McSame, he's an even bigger idiot than bush is.
