What's the name of the little devices that detect if there is an electricity cable behind a wall?

These are supposed to prevent you from drilling into a cable and killing yourself. I'm trying to find them on eBay but don't know what they're called. I'm putting some shelves and stuff up at home and don't particularly want thousands of volts coursing through my body. I'm still young and handsome. Well, young anyway.

Reply:Stethoscope?....
Reply:Cable detector?
Reply:why EBAY.. there arent expensive from any DIY shed.. anywhere between 拢5 %26amp; 拢20.

go out and get one, and stop procastinating/putting off doing the job

incidentally you are not going to get thousnads of volts... a mere 240v AC should do the trick nicely
Reply:volt stick. Seriously.
Reply:Metal Detector.

Some are more sophisticated and tell you by different beeps or sounds what is in the wall.Wether it be wood or metal or a live cable, or even a gas or water pipe.

The more elaborate the device the more it costs.

Good luck
Reply:They're just a small metal detector in a case thats all there is to it.
Reply:go to wal-mart, lowes, borg etc and check out the electrical section,, for about $9 you can get a voltage detector that is about the size and shape of a fountain pen! I have two and they come in handy very often as I am a big DIYer! you put the tip in an outlet socket or just pass it along a wall and it will beep if there is A.C. flowing! one I have is adjustable to be able to detect voltage in walls or isolate outlet prongs!
